Teaching adults through a Freirean lens, inspired by Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy, focuses on creating an interactive and inclusive educational environment. This approach emphasizes a dialogical method, where learning is a two-way exchange of ideas and experiences between educators and learners. Unlike traditional models that treat learners as passive recipients of knowledge, this approach encourages active participation, critical thinking, and the application of learning to real-world contexts.

Central to Freire’s philosophy is the concept of ‘conscientização’ or critical consciousness, which aims to empower learners to recognize and challenge social, political, and economic contradictions. In adult education, this involves integrating learners’ diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences into the learning process, thereby making education more relevant and impactful.

The educator’s role in this framework is not just to impart knowledge but to facilitate learning as a collaborative process. This includes adapting teaching methods and curriculum to suit the varied learning styles and needs of adult students, who bring a wealth of experience to the educational setting.
